The exhibition dedicated to Venetian artist Croce Caravella – collateral event of 51. Biennale of Art of Venice – aims at visualize synergic contrasts in his dream-like urban vision and desert-like representation of natural places. Colours, sings, streaks, furrows, magma and material, all spread together, cast on canvas surface their own belonging and territoriality, giving birth to a new, different, total language. It’s a kind of volcanic translation of a vast, chaotic, frenetic reality on one side, and of a still, empty one, presented by connections between city and nature features of his abstract opera. These two realities, apparently so opposite, meet together and seem to be feed by the same power.

Croce Taravella was born in 1964 in Polizzi Generosa (Palermo). He lives and works between Centro Madonita di Castellana Sicula (Pa), where his atelier is situated, Palermo and Rome.

Croce Taravella is definitely Sicilian contemporary artist most famous at the moment. He realized lots of exhibition all over the world (Sydney, Barcellona, Berlino, Bregenz, Parigi). Besides painting and sculpture, he’s active with “total installations” (e.g. Tacheles in Berlin, Vucciria, Mazzarina, ect…). In Parco d’Arte della Kalsa, fro example, Taravella uses a huge pump to paint a massive structure in Piazza Maggiore.

CROCE TARAVELLA MDC PROJECT
Cities, their futures, their symbolic power, today are centre of a debate, embracing architecture, urban planning, cinema, literature and policy. We learned how towns may rise - as for Umberto Boccioni’s utopia of the beginning of 20th Century - but also fall – thinking about 2000 New York. There’s no better way than painting to catch and represent a scenery that otherwise is reproduced only by anonymous mass video-production, unable to witness details and change. It’s already few years that Croce Taravella gives voice to that big topic, The Painted City, emphasizing this subject’s power on painters’ imagination. His project is gigantic, massive, geographically adventurous: a special kind of worldwide investigation about soul and flesh of places.

First al all, he identifies and shows Metropolis as a sort of multicoloured skin of the world. And only the violent but free gesture of painting - in artist’s opinion - seems to capture energy, to catch that inexhaustible stream of action, movement, thought, fear, desire that cross our civilization.
Taravella explores vacant areas of the Earth – Deserts - thinking about them as large zones of decompression and purification, where nothing reveals itself as fullness and eye and mind restore contact with real human essence.
